A GoDaddy Burp That Almost Had Me Running For The Door
By Ken Montville
I recently decided to try and start a new "general interest" blog. My current blog is all about real estate and it's even more specific by being about real estate in the MD Suburbs of DC. So, the readership I get is pretty small and very transient. People come to look for specific information, maybe stay around to read a blog post or two and then disappear back into the cloud. Beginning a New Adventure I had hooked up with an blogging guru I found from another blog in cyberspace and I thought I was going to be doing great stuff. Instead I got about 2 hours of "coaching" before I realized I was paying just to chat with a guy about possibilities without any real help or direction. It turns out that part of this guy's schtick was installing Wordpress themes on eith GoDaddy or HostGator. He freely admitted he had affiliate relationships and that he offered his low, low price because he got some money from one of the two. Ok. Fine. It turned out that about two years ago I bought a hosting package with GoDaddy and it was essentially just sitting there (I bought the 5 year package). So this Internet guru guy agreed to install a premium Woo Theme on GoDaddy for what the balance of the "coaching" would have been (note: I paid in advance, of course, which is how all these things are structured). The GoDaddy Burp All was going well. He ran into a few little bumps in the road but nothing he couldn't handle. That is, until GoDaddy had some "known issues" with the server this new blog was about to be hosted on. The thing either moved slow as molasses or timed out. It continued to do this for almost 3 days. If my blog had been up and running or if it had been going great guns and tons of readers or visitors were coming to it they would have been confronted with a blank page. The worst part of all of this is that I was on the phone with GoDaddy for almost a half hour before they uncovered the "known issue" with the server. Of course they wanted my Internet guru guy to disable all the plug-ins and a bunch of other stuff. But it wasn't that. It was a GoDaddy server issue. All turned out well and we got the blog up. I've just started adding content so it's no great shakes...yet. Thankfully, GoDaddy fixed whatever was wrong with the server and both the blog itself and the admin page load just fine. It does give me pause, though.
