Book Review: Trust Agents
By Ken Montville
If you've been involved in social media you may have come across Chris Brogan who writes a blog on social media and engages on Twitter as well. The man has quite a following. He's teamed up with Julien Smith to write Trust Agents - Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation , and Earn Trust. Long title. Most of Chris' blogging has to do with building relationships across then "new media", as he calls it, to build a reputation of integrity and "trust". Thus, the title. His premise is that by becoming a "trust agent" you can build a wider network of people who will either become customers or refer people to you. More Than a "How To" While this book does, in fact, go into ways to use social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and others (and it's fairly basic) it really dives more deeply into how to behave in the blogosphere in order to build a reputation and become a connector. Or, get to know a connector - a person the book refers to as "Agent Zero". It's really a pretty good book with some provocative ideas. It's also highly readable with flashes of humor and lots of sidebars that provide more detailed explanations of the concepts Chris and Julien write about in each chapter. If you're into the whole social media thing and want to use it as a business tool for the 21st Century, this book is worth a look. Amazon put it in the Top Ten Business Books of 2009 and it's well deserved.
