Difficult Clients and the Law of Attraction

By Ken Montville

Earlier this year - sometime in January, I think - I wrote a post here on Qondio called Resolving to be Resolute. In a nutshell it was about being up front and honest with my clients even if it meant that they would tell me to take a hike and hire someone else to do the job.

A few blog posts ago I talked about a client that disengaged from me after I insisted that he look at the risk and the amount of debt he was taking on my buying a house for his brother and sister-in-law.

Now, it seems I have been attracting extremely difficult clients into my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm used to working with people who are on an emotional roller coaster. Buying or selling a home is a big deal and many people have second, third and fourth thoughts about decisions they make throughout the process. However, lately, it seems that only the most difficult clients are coming at me.

One client - a home seller - has been bouncing back and forth about whether to go through with the sale. She hasn't lived in the house for over a year. It's in horrible condition. She continues to pay a mortgage and utility bills. It makes no sense to hold onto it. Even with a great buyer which, in this case is a real estate investor, this particular client can't seem to get it together to follow through on even the simplest tasks. A friend of hers who has kind of taken her under her wing is slowly reaching the end of her rope, too. I'm not a doctor but I think I can pretty much figure out my client really needs some professional help outside of trying to sell her former home.

Another client, who is under pressure to move out her rental home but the end of April, can't make a decision about what home to buy. There have been several she liked and has said she could see herself living in. Yet, there might be another one that comes on the market tomorrow that will be nicer and cheaper. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she made a decision too quickly and another home became available. Meanwhile the clock is ticking. If she doesn't act she may end up homeless.

These are just two examples of the type of challenging clients that have been coming into my life and my business. Some would say that I'm in the "people business" and that I should be more adaptable to different personalities. There is some truth to that. However, I am finding that difficult clients are a huge drain on my energy and put be in a bad mood which affects my home life as well as my interaction with other clients and my professional colleagues.

At the end of the day, I feel drained and burned out.

I remember the real estate transactions that were fun. The people I worked with respected my experience and expertise. We got to know each other pretty well and some of them even became friends. Others referred their friends, family and co-workers or came back to me when the time came to buy another house or sell their home to move to another city...or whatever. There are times when real estate can be lots and lots of fun.

I've taken a lot of personal development courses over the years and have read tons of books including the runaway bestseller,The Secret. They all talk about the Law of Attraction. That people and things are bought into our lives because of something we are doing or thinking that is attracting them. I don't know if this is true or not but I am looking at my life now and wondering what I'm doing or who I'm associating with that is attracting difficult clients.

What I have decided to do is to disengage as politely but as firmly as possible from people in my life who are draining all the energy out of me. It means a loss of income. But my life and my psychic health are worth more than the commission.

I can only hope that by saying "no" to people who exude negative energy that more positive energy will flow into my life.

The internet is a great shopping resource, Ken. However, the wealth of information can be very confusing to some people and hinders their decisionmaking.
I sold for many years, and separating the shopper from the buyer has always been a challenge.
Best wishes.
Frederick
