Finding The Right Wordpress Blog Theme - Not As Easy As It Looks
By Ken Montville
As I mentioned in another piece of intel here, I recently decided to start another blog that would be a complete departure from what I had been blogging about for the past two years (real estate). I really only had two criteria: - that it have a nice look and - I could eventually make some money from it I'm no geek so I really didn't know how to install the blog or how to really pick out a good theme. There must be thousands of Wordpress themes in the world. Free, cheap, expensive. You can even buy the premium theme like Thesis and then buy the skin so it looks like something more than a white page with text. It amazed me at how complex it was just picking out the theme. Does the theme look pretty right out of the box? Does it do what you want? Can you add widgets and ads and whatnot along the sidebar? How easy is it to figure out the admin page and do you really need to be a coder to figure all this stuff out. My confession is that I paid to have my real estate blog done and it was relatively cheap because that's all the blog deign company did - real estate blogs and websites. They had a system that they could snap in place. Doing It On My Own Wasn't An Option I knew I couldn't do this on my own and I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars paying a designer to customize a premium theme. So I cut a deal with an Internet guru/coach to put together something with Woo Themes. He had an affiliate relationship with Woo so he kind of steered me in that direction. Now, Woo Themes are OK. They aren't great and they have a few quirks in the back end that make it a little bit of a pain in the ass. Plus, it's really not as customizable or flexible as I would have liked. Searching For The Right Theme Now, I'm on the hunt for a decent theme. I've looked at Thesis. I'm looking at Headway. Another guru is suggesting either Thesis or Frugal. It's just huge. Anything I pick is probably going to need a designer to add the "skin" or tweak the theme so it'll be readable, navigable, intuitive and, most importantly, something I'll be able to generate some income through one day. It just amazes me as I wander through cyberspace and see all the really cool designs. Why can't I have one for 29.95? :-)
