Is There a Third Tribe in the Social Media Space?

By Ken Montville

I recently came across this concepts of the three tribes in the social media space. It is an interesting concept and something I've been noticing but not really knowing how to put a name to it.

One tribe is made up of the so-called social medial cool kids. They're like the cool kids in high school that everyone wanted to hang out with or be like. But they only selected a chosen few to let into their circle. Everyone else kinda looked on either with disdain and resentment or longing.

Another tribe is described as the crass marketers that will say anything to get you to a certain page or to buy a certain product. Most of the time they're pretty obvious. The make outrageous claims and every now and then they come through with the goods.

The Third Tribe is a group of bloggers, marketers and social media folks who engage with others honestly and with integrity. They blog about things they know about and love. They follow their passion...and they make a few bucks doing it.

A few of the people involved include Darren Rowse of Problogger, Brian Clark of Copyblogger and Chris Brogan of ChrisBrogan.com - all highly respected bloggers.

What I like best about The Third Tribe is that in addition to the core content, the forums are filled with people that are sharing enormous amounts of great information.

Ken is the Realtor Extraordinaire of the MD Suburbs of DC. Personable and knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. You can find out what he knows, what he thinks and what he can find out on his blog - www.MDSuburbs.com

Well, the fact that were are self-organizing into groups only lends more credibility to the title SOCIAL media.

I suspect there is a 4th tribe that haven't a clue what they are doing or why they are doing it.
